Volunteers can also gain valuable experience on teaching skills at their placement and also bring new ideas to their placement: impactful for both the volunteer and the placement. About the Teaching and Youth Development Volunteer Program
Are you interested in making a difference in a young person’s life? Teaching and youth development may be the ideal volunteer opportunities in Jamaica. Since Jamaica is an English speaking island, volunteers can bring value to students by teaching a foreign language, be it Spanish, German or even French.
What in this life could possibly be more rewarding than the thought of sharing moments with peers and imparting skills which help in building meaningful relationships with their families and friends? Additionally, as an international volunteer you can gain invaluable experience in teaching especially if you are pursuing a course in teaching, or you are already a practicing teacher. While impacting on the lives of students, it will also be an excellent opportunity to learn from the local teachers in Jamaica, and exchange ideas on matters of education such as best teaching practices.
The Program runs all year, and caters to the mature and responsible volunteer or group who wish to make a difference in the Jamaican school system. The needs vary based on the placement; some placements will want help in specific subject areas while others seek teaching volunteers in classroom management in the capacity of a teaching assistant.
Teaching and Youth Development Volunteer Program Requirement
Volunteer teaching abroad programs do not require a certificate or degree in education; however specialization such as English, Math or Computer Teacher for example will require at least basic subject matter awareness. Formal education in teaching or currently studying in the field is a plus.
